Perhaps you're planning to come and visit a certain part of Poland, or perhaps tour the country. Train travel is incredibly cheap in Poland compared to the UK, enabling you to see much of Poland for a very reasonable cost.

In southern Poland, the terrain is generally hilly and as you approach Zakopane you're confronted by the Tatra mountain range. This is the land of the Highlander or Gorale, former shepherds.

Nowadays, tourism is more profitable than keeping sheep, although you can still find plenty of sheepskin products for sale such as coats, rugs, fur-lined boots, hats and gloves to cushion covers.

Holidays in southern Poland

train to Gubalowka from zakopane

A trip to the ski resort of Zakopane is a must if you're in the south of Poland. Set at the foot of the Tatra mountains, the town has a lively high street with loads of pubs and restaurants.

  • Take the rack and pinion train up to the top of Gubalowka mountain for superb views over the town. It's just a 3 minute journey and worth the effort.
  • If it's snowing, got to go on a horse drawn sleigh ride - to Morskie Oko (the 'Eye of the Sea' lake high in the mountains is recommended).
  • In the summer, brave the rapids in white water rafting on the Dunajec river.
  • Enjoy the regional food in one of many Karczmas or regional wooden styled restaurants.
